Development work for week 11 (unit 2)

Outline of next 4 weeks (unit 2)

Week 1

As stated in the first aim in my proposal I want to investigate how iconology is used in digital art. This means looking at other artists as well as developing digital imagery myself. I will look at simple icons that have existed in our society for a long time (e.g. men & women, male & female) and examine how they have been represented both traditionally and in the digital domain.

Week 2

Develop digital art images and a small Director interactive piece that uses icons from the previous week. The Director example will look at ideas that are represented using some of the following:

  • Pictures
  • Pictograms
  • Hieroglyphics
  • Ideograms
  • Phonetic signs

Week 3

Continue to gather and develop digital images that explore the themes that W.J.T. Mitchell described as "verbal imagery" and "mental imagery".

Week 4

Continue adding definitions of icons, iconology and related topics to a FileMaker database I am working on. This database will be eventually be hosted on my iconology web site (possibly in SQL). I also want to look at icons in the digital domain and develop digital art examples that relate to how iconology and iconography is used in digital art.
